Choosing Doing Over Feeling 2009-12-05
My challenge to myself during the next 27 days is to be not led by my feelings. I will rely on my goals to motivate me and continue to do what I need to do everyday regardless of what mood I’m in.

What's Your Family Health History

Looking healthy is only the tip of the iceberg. How efficient is my heart and lungs working; is my blood healthy, are my blood sugar levels stable; how’s my cholesterol; my bones; joints and muscles? I (we’ve) got to be healthy on the inside as well as the outside.

Last week I went back for my follow up visit with my doctor after my annual physical. I think she was more shocked than I was to discover that my blood sugars levels continue to increase. ‘You’re the fittest person I know’, my doctor says to me.

I think I’m in pretty good shape too I say to myself but my mind also flashes back to the sugar in my coffee ( coffee substitute) this morning and my mid-morning sweet treat. Oh and then there’s the chocolate I had yesterday in place of lunch...

After my doctor told me that my blood sugar levels were high ( approaching boarder-line) I called up my mother to tell her the news. ‘Oh yeah, mine is also borderline,’ replied my mother. Wow, I never knew that! I never even thought to ask!

My doctor’s visit ( and conversation with my mother) was a stark reminder to me of what I tell my clients all the time . You’ve got to be proactive – find out your family health history; stay on top of your physical examinations and eat and exercise for your unique body’s needs and make up.

I believed that because I exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet that I would never be plagued with any type of lifestyle illness. I thought that exercise was going to be my ‘get out of jail free’ card.

This experience has also reminded me that looking healthy is only the tip of the iceberg. How efficient is your heart and lungs working; is your blood healthy, are your blood sugar levels stable; how’s your cholesterol; your bones; joints and muscles? We've got to be healthy on the inside as well as the outside.

God has designed us to be healthy but we must partner with him to maintain our health.

So what’s the plan now? I’ve changed my exercise routine. I will now be exercising most days a week. I am going to be more diligent in minimizing my consumption of refined foods.

Do you know your family health history?
