Change Your Mind, Change Your Life

"One cannot alter a condition with the same mind set that created it in the first place. "

~ Albert Einstein

We cannot endeavour to reach the pinnacle of success and excellence while failing to address the condition of our minds. The reality is that your mental attitude, fortitude and condition are critical factors which determine the heights to which you will soar. Unfortunately we have become masters of clichés; we know all the authors we should read, all the catch words of the day and the "affirmations" we must recite in order to "succeed" but something remains missing.

We have failed to look inside ourselves at what we really believe. If we are honest enough we may realize that we have established limitations and boundaries within our minds that are holding us back from living our best lives. Your assignment then is to explore what you really believe about yourself and your ability to reach the goals and dreams that lie before you. You have got to start from the inside out and deal with the mind sets you have created, for until that is done the journey to your new season will be hindered. So from today be prepared to make some changes and most importantly be bold enough to free your mind!!

The Scoop on Poop

Warning, if this article contains ideas or words that do not meet your standards... please lower your standards!

During this month of finding different ways of assessing our health, I set out on a quest to find "the ideal poop". It seemed logical that what comes out should be a good indication of how your body is processing what you put in to it. Not surprisingly, there are hundreds of conflicting articles on what constitutes a healthy load. After reading a whole lot of "doo-doo," a few criteria were necessary for birthing the perfect poop.

ODOUR This is an easy one – there should be none! Odour could indicate a number of factors: food rotting or fermenting in the intestines; bad food combinations; drinking too much water with foods or consuming too much meat or sugars.

CONSISTENCY I was unable to get the real scoop on what the ideal poop should look like! In his book The Bowel Book, Dr Michael Levitt writes that your stool should resemble the shape and consistency of an unripe banana. This is in contrast to Dr. McDougall of the McDougall Wellness Centre's view that it should be unformed (more like cow plop). There was general agreement however that it should not be hard or "loggy", indicating a diet lacking in fibre, nor should it be watery (diarrhea) which could indicate some form of food poisoning.

SPEED It should be quick and effortless. There should be no reason to take a newspaper into the bathroom (for reading, that is!), although I believe that newspaper in the outhouse is the traditional hygienic accessory! Transit time should be one or two minutes of effortless elimination. There should be no straining or pain in the abdominals.

COLOUR It should represent the colour of the food we ate. If you had spinach then it should be greenish and beets would make it reddish in color. The more meat consumed, the darker the color.

FREQUENCY Now here is where the experts really disagree! Your family doctor may tell you that normal can range from 3 times per day to 3 times per week. Holistic practitioners believe that one should void after each meal or at least once a day. This seems to make more sense... if it goes in then it should come out. Populations that consume high fiber diets empty their bowels approximately 3 times per day and have very low incidences of colon cancer!

BUOYANCY Floating stools are usually associated with some degree of mal-absorption of nutrients or excessive gas. They should not be floating on top the water!

So that's the scoop on poop! Your diet has a significant impact on your intestinal health. Be aware that there are many other reasons that make our eliminations less than ideal but your diet is one factor that you can control. If you are a parent then the thought of examining poop is not new to you. I you haven't tried it, you're missing out on some valuable "nuggets" of information!

Tune in next week to read how to improve the quality of your stool. Refined, processed, low fiber foods, animal fats, a lack of exercise and an ever-increasing level of stress all contribute to our current gastrointestinal health crisis.

As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. (Proverbs 23.7).

Right thinking begins with what you tell yourself. Are you listening to the voice inside that condemns, criticizes and judges you? Do you constantly tell yourself that you are not good enough, didn't work hard enough, prepare long enough... Remember that you are what you think about all day long! Start by listening to what you're telling yourself. If you find that a lot of our inner dialogue is negative than start reframing your conversation in the positive.

Lets use the following example to start change your thinking

i.e.,. what's wrong with me, why can't I exercise everyday like other people

Ask yourself the following questions.

Are you expecting too much of yourself?
Is it realistic to exercise every day ?
Is exercising everyday necessary to accomplish your goals?
Do you have specific goals?
Are you enjoying what you're doing ?
Is your motivation for working out intrinsically or extrinsically based?

Taking the time to answer these questions can give you better insight into your challenges and help to provide some better solutions to help you reach your goal.
