Visualize Victory
The real voyage of discovery consists not of seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.

On this journey to the new season of your life you have already been encouraged to free your mind, now it's time for a transplant the procedure: replacing your old eyes with new, focused, future-compliant ones. It is critical for you to remember that vision is paramount to success in any endeavour. Even before you reap the rewards of your achievements you must have already visualized the victory.
Too many opportunities are lost because of a lack of vision - it's time to maximize the ones that are already before you and those to come. To be truly successful you have to be more than a dream chaser - you must strive to be a visionary. As you stay on the task of living your best life I challenge you to visualize your success even before it materializes for that's the mark of a true champion.
~ Nadia C. Thomas

"Keep It Moving Please"
If you're less than pleased with what's you've expelled in your toilet bowl over the last week then stay tuned. Hopefully you haven't run to your local pharmacy to buy some "digestive aids" - laxatives, stool softeners, colon cleansers, stimulants, bulking agents, anti-diarrheal remedies etc, etc. Americans spend $725 million a year on laxatives alone!
(I'm sure we Canadians are not that far "behind"!). Although examining your bowel movements may make you the " butt" of many jokes, it's no laughing matter that colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of death from cancer (Canadian Cancer Statistics 2004).
Recommendations for Healthy Bowels
Eat a Healthy Diet
- Consume 25-30 grams of fibre per day (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, peas and beans) -- 1 serving of fruit or veg = 2-3 grams , ½ bran cereal = 10-13 grams
- Decrease or eliminate your consumption of hydrogenated foods (margarine), refined salts, sugars, oils, aspartame, caffeine, MSG , food additives and preservatives, junk foods, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages ( over the next year I'll discuss these individually!)
- Drink at least eight 8 ounce cups of water per day (or one ounce for every pound -- divide your weight by 8 to get the # of cups). Water adds bulk to the stools making bowel movements easier to pass.
- Consume essential fatty acids (flax seed oil, Udo's oil, fish oils and dark green leafy vegetables)
- Eating live active cultures (acidophilus) to promote "friendly" intestinal bacteria as found in organic yoghurt, kefir or miso
Participate in Regular Aerobic Activity
- Exercise tones the muscles of the intestines to keep them in shape for moving their contents along
Watch Those Stress Levels
- There is a direct link to stress levels and irritable bowel syndrome which studies show to affect 12-20% of Canadians.
Remember that regularity of bowel movements is important for good colorectal health. For optimum health, try to have one to three bowel movements per day.
