Nutrition Tip of the Week
Java Facts
Fact 1
Caffeine has a half-life of an average of four hours, so it will take your body four hours to rid itself of half the amount of caffeine that you've consumed. After eight hours, your body will contain one-quarter of the original amount and, after 12 hours, your body will still contain one-eighth of what you first drank.
Fact 2
Caffeine is a strong diuretic - it makes you urinate more than usual. Apparently this is due to increasing the blood flow through the kidneys.
Fact 3
In the brain it constricts the cerebral blood vessels. If you're used to drinking several cups of coffee a day but then you quit, those blood vessels will dilate, maybe enough to give you a powerful headache. It's one of the best known withdrawal symptoms.
