How to Get Your Man to Exercise

Dropping subtle hints like tightening all the jars in the cupboards and then asking your man to open them may not be the best way to motivate him to exercise. Find out what does work.

If I had a dime for every time one of my clients expressed concern over their husband’s health I would be a very rich woman.

This post is in response to all of the women who have shared their frustrations and fears with me about their husband’s/partner’s unwillingness to exercise despite all of the threats and ultimatums and doctor’s warnings.

Ladies, I know it’s hard to sit by any watch someone you love make poor choices but take a little advice from someone who’s heard it all… here’s what not to do!!

  • Don’t drop subtle hints like tighten all the jars in the cupboards and then laugh at him when he can’t open them
  • Don’t overstate your point by forcing him to sign his life insurance policy
  • Don’t cut out pictures of your husbands face and attach it to the guy on the cover of Men’s Health ( then post it on the fridge)
  • Don’t send your kids to ask him if he’s pregnant or gaining weight on purpose to be Santa Clause next Christmas
  • Don’t suggest that he start wearing your bras because his man boobs might need a bit of support
  • Don’t hire Joe the trainer (who you’ve secretly instructed to make him ‘feel the burn’) to quickly whip him into shape

If you really want to help your man get in better shape this year then guilt, fear and utter humiliation are probably not the best ways to achieve your goals or help him achieve his. This Valentine’s Day, surprise your lover with the gift of fitness. Try some of these more subtle and practical suggestions:

  • Do it together- Get a babysitter 1x per week to start and go for a long walk together
  • Multi-task- Men often give time as the #1 reason why they don’t exercise so suggest that he combines what he already does with exercise such as read the paper, have a meeting or return phone calls
  • Let your fingers do the walking- Seek out hotel gyms and book a trainer for him while on his business trips
  • Meddle in his business-Ask one of his closest friends if he would also be interested in working out and have them do it together
  • Get with the gadgets- Lets face it, men like gadgets- get him tools like a heart rate monitor, calorie trackers or even the Wii Fit
  • State the added benefits- A German study from Cologne University Medical Center has found that physical exercise can be as effective as Viagra in dealing with erectile dysfunction
  • Get him professional help- Hiring a personal trainer will provide a structured exercise program that will help him achieve maximum results in the least amount of time while avoiding injury.
